On April 30, 2016, the BEYOND THE BUILDTM campaign was launched internally through a video. BEYOND THE BUILDTM is an internal and external campaign that encompasses the firm’s core purpose: “To build great value, relationships and careers while having fun in the process” and core values: Honesty and Integrity, Customer Service, Passion for Excellence, Balanced Life and Building Partnerships.
The internal launch was timed to increase employee retention and assist with future recruitment. The firm had a challenging 2015. Employee retention rates fell below the industry average with a decline in retaining talent under the age of 40. Employees were leaving for financial reasons. On March 24, 2016, it was decided to communicate the firm’s differentiators and highlights during a face-to-face company-wide meeting on April 30th. To be more emotionally impactful, a video would be created. The goal was to capture the firm’s essence- people, innovation, community, teamwork, fun and passion. Within a month, the video was scripted, shot, edited and produced.
It features 57 of the firm’s 130 employees and purposefully excludes the executive team to focus on the talent that drives success. SMW has a culture of openness, engagement and fun and that culture was projected through the use of many employees in a variety of roles. The messages in the video are spoken, handwritten, typed and displayed on iPads. Furthermore employees are pictured working and having fun.
