In years’ past, Henderson streamed company meetings to 600+ employee desktops. Pretty impersonal. In 2015 —to unveil our Vision, Purpose, and strategic plan— our goal was to create an event that truly fostered employee engagement.
We set out to do that by building excitement through a series of events. We wanted every employee to have a consistent experience, so we shipped supplies to all 11 offices. The activities throughout the week followed the theme of a “journey/hike” (to reach our goals), including:
Inspirational messages in “surprise” locations (mirrors, breakrooms) teasing our Purpose of “reaching your full potential.”
“Selfie Stations” with the goal of 100 employees (16%) posting social media pictures using the hashtag #BeThe_______. Our goal was to align employees personally with our Vision to “Be the Firm.” We received 226 posts (38%).
Fostering community by gathering employees in conference rooms for the meeting, followed by Q&A with leadership.
Collecting stories of employees “reaching their full potential.” Our goal was to collect 10 stories. During the videoconference, two clients (Nike and HOK) shared how we’ve helped them “reach their full potential,” and 17 employees shared personal stories.
Using an inspirational video featuring our own employees.
Providing desktop accessories to keep messages top-of-mind: a coaster, notebook, “hiking map” with strategic plan goals, and a desktop computer background.
A Stronger Community Aligned Around Common Purpose. We received feedback from employees who were authentically inspired by the new direction. And leadership now sees our company meetings as critical events for building engagement.
