Creative Brief

Decoding Frederick Douglass Memorial Hall is a 150-page book developed to support Howard University’s fundraising efforts by translating the significance of this campus landmark into a compelling narrative asset. This volume is the first in a series conceived by the university’s Office of Real Estate Development and Capital Asset Management to illuminate its diverse architectural heritage and ongoing relationship with the community.

Across six chapters, the publication examines the hall’s design, cultural context, and evolving role on campus. Named for the abolitionist Frederick Douglass and shaped by pioneering Black designers including Albert I. Cassell and David Williston, the building encodes meaning through its form, siting, and material expression. Over time, it has served as a backdrop and participant in pivotal moments, from shaping the intellectual groundwork of Brown v. Board of Education to hosting defining cultural and political events.

While this structure is deeply embedded in narratives of Black education, civil rights, and cultural advancement, this layered story had never been fully articulated. This project addresses that gap with a dual purpose: to strengthen fundraising efforts by reinforcing institutional identity and pride, and to position Frederick Douglass Memorial Hall and Howard University as enduring witnesses to and agents of social progress.

Blending architectural analysis with historical storytelling, the book reframes the built environment as a powerful medium for cultural memory. In doing so, it demonstrates how design-driven narratives can elevate fundraising strategy, expand architecture’s role in shaping public understanding, and underscore the need for continued investment in modernization.
