Injury and death are unfortunately all too common in construction. Improving safety through continuous training, education, and implementing and enforcing best practices help mitigate that toll. Every construction project is different with a unique risk profile and requires a site specific safety orientation. Our challenge was to write, stage, film, and edit a video showing comprehensive safety "non-negotiables" applicable to all Flintco job sites, with clear messaging, engaging visuals, and a testing and tracking component, while making it accessible to anyone in advance of starting work.
The production team started with a draft script from an area safety manager that required multiple re-writes with input from Legal, Human Resources, and Safety. We discovered writing and delivering a script for broadcast is more challenging than producing editorial copy. We overcame inexperienced and nervous, in-house talent with patient coaching and perfected the use of a teleprompter. We knew the final cut must be bi-lingual, and not simply English with Spanish subtitles. Thankfully, our initial English/Spanish speaking talent divulged his insecurity early in delivering both scripts effectively. We found an in-house native Spanish speaker.
In addition to our staff videographer, we engaged a longtime video consultant. We scoured YouTube for inspiration. We saw an opportunity to introduce contemporary editing techniques - green screen, match cut transitions, including drones, and interesting graphic overlays to keep the finished product looking fresh throughout, but serious. The soundtrack is an original recording.
