When a young engineer from South Dakota joined Burns & McDonnell in 1980, no one could foretell the cultural revolution he would bring to every facet of the firm throughout the span of his career. A champion of employee ownership, a catalyst for change in our communities and a pioneer of explosive growth, former CEO and Chairman Greg Graves embraced every opportunity to launch Burns & McDonnell forward into an era of unbridled success.
Greg’s words and actions inspire and impact each employee-owner, directly and by ripple effect. As we reflected on Greg’s career upon his retirement, honoring his many sacrifices and achievements, it seemed only fitting to turn to what he valued the most during his time at Burns & Mac — people. While the stories of his influence, leadership and achievements are endless, the few we captured here embody some of the tangible and intangible ways Greg has made a lasting impact.
We wanted to illustrate how Greg — only the seventh CEO in our 119-year history — stands among the leaders whose strategic vision and passion have brought Burns & McDonnell to where we are today. We also hoped to highlight his civic involvement, his advocacy for employee ownership, his focus on client success and his desire to help Burns & McDonnell become one of the best places to work.
The video was a triumph of stories, nostalgia and soaring music to celebrate our departing leader.
