At a time when we're losing dozens of species every day, this campaign was about more than highlighting the innovation and conservation-focused work being done in our firm. The inaugural ECHO16 event was about connecting zoo leaders to ask the tough questions facing zoos.
ECHO was creative, risky, and infused with an incredible amount of hospitality and human-to-human connection on behalf of a beautiful, wild world.
The ECHO event, supported by branded promotional videos, e-blasts, and print materials, along with a custom-made sculpture for participants, created a space for zoo professionals and non-zoological experts to discuss solutions to the many threats facing wildlife.
On June 8, 2016, 33 zoo directors representing 26 Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) institutions kicked off ECHO16 at GLMV's headquarters with a reception and dinner. On June 9, participants gathered at Sedgwick County Zoo for a full day of programming, with presentations, "innovation sessions" for small-group work, as well as zoo tours and networking.
The keynote speaker was Brian DesRoches, a neuroscientist who spoke to the natural process of memory formation. He shared the types of experiences and the kinds of questions we should be asking as zoos to create lifelong, transformative memories based in conservation and action.
Follow-up components included a recap booklet, media coverage (radio, print, digital), and ECHO Digital, a nationwide fascination forum for AZA zoo professionals to continue the conversations started at ECHO16.
ECHO17 will be hosted at North Carolina Zoo June 20-22, 2017, with keynote speaker and author Dan Heath.
