Although the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission has a built-in customer base – the thousands of private and commercial vehicle operators who use the Pennsylvania Turnpike to crisscross the state for business and for pleasure –the general public, and even those in the industry, often regard interstate highways with indifference at best, and a necessary evil at worst, more closely associated with inconvenience– backups and road construction and accidents –than anything extraordinary. The occasion of the Turnpike’s 75th anniversary gave the Marketing Department an opportunity to create a promotional film that that called attention to the profoundly exhilarating experience of modern highway travel
Providing for a well maintained, ever improving, ever innovating modern highway system is not often appreciated, typically because so much of the work is either behind the scenes, or based on innovations that have accrued over time. This anniversary video addresses this, not by telling, in a heavy handed, or didactic way, but by showing. Historic and contemporary images and film footage, as well as voices from the past and the present, are interwoven seamlessly, and pulled along by a simple but powerful narration, along with a strong and compelling musical score. The videography builds on an almost a dreamy mélange of contrasts: past and present, lightness and darkness, seasonal change, accelerated time lapse sequences and slow motion. The final effect melds past, present and future into a simple but powerful statement about the Turnpike’s on-going, and timeless mission – to provide safe, efficient and convenient travel for motorists
