The PA Turnpike was turning 75 years old. Gone were the days of big budget celebrations; therefore, the creation of a coffee table book called The Pennsylvania Turnpike: Moments in Motion came to fruition. The agency wanted to give its employees, customers and history aficionados a visual of its 75 years. The goal was simple – share the Turnpike’s story via the archive of photos. With a plethora of books on the shelves, we wanted our “history” book to have a different twist rather than our viewers to turn the pages by decade.
The creative minds relive the Turnpike’s iconic “moments in motion” with images of yesterday and today as well as before and after. Chapters divided by explosions, construction and signs – yes, even signage has evolved though the past 75 years. We entice readers to read the caption to find out when and where they are at that time within each chapter. Each image carefully selected for that section. Each font chosen to combine both yesterday and today. The matte stock picked to enhance the image with its texture and luster. In addition, Moments in Motion was designed as a square book – giving it a unique appearance from the standard rectangle books on the market.
It is amazing to think Moments in Motion was researched, designed and printed in less than seven months; we were told this undertaking required two years. The again, the PA Turnpike did take two years to initially build and open 160-miles.
