Creative Brief
In 2018, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) launched a new intranet, Milo. Milo represented a significant milestone for SGH by overcoming outdated operating standards and cultural norms for a modern, collaborative tool that facilitates growth.
SGH employees rarely used the previous intranet, SGHnet, due to difficulty in posting, sharing, and finding information. For more than 90% of employees, the sole purpose for accessing SGHnet was to complete timesheets. More than 15 years old, SGHnet was visually unappealing and lacked knowledge sharing functionality. With Milo, we successfully accomplished several goals:
- Search: Employees’ primary complaint of SGHnet was poor search capability. Milo offers smart search, including auto complete, ranked search results, results organized by content type, and custom search features for project data and photos.
- Personalization: Milo customizes individuals’ homepages with relevant information, based on preferences and settings. Users appreciate the advanced interface and personal experience.
- Collaboration: SGH has 10 office locations and dozens of internal groups. All users can contribute to Milo for sharing best practices, solving problems, celebrating successes, and making connections.
- Analytics: Milo makes it easy for administrators to understand who is using the platform and how, enabling constant evaluation and improvement.
- Mobility: Through the Milo app, employees can access content and contribute to conversations from project sites, airplanes, or wherever they are.
Pre- and post-launch communications and training included lunch talks, weekly emails, video tutorials, user case studies, and leadership blogs. We encouraged participation with activities including photo contests, featured project write-ups, and videos to share “good vibes.”
